$15/person at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center
Get a behind-the-scenes perspective on the unique architectural design of the 1951 Webster House, which now houses the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center.
This history and design tour will begin in the former great room, where participants will hear a brief history of the Webster House, learn about architect Paul Hayden Kirk, and explore key principles of Northwest Modern design. Follow your guide on a meandering exploration of the home’s interior and exterior, including areas not normally available to the public, where you’ll observe important design elements and envision what it might have been like to live here.
This is your chance to learn how Kirk’s architectural design was inspired by the home’s striking location and view, creating a unique sense of place and connection to nature. You’ll also discover how the development of new building materials and technologies allowed mid-century architects to incorporate new design elements—and hear a perspective on how some those innovations have aged over time.
In addition to plenty of fascinating insights, your tour will also include time to engage with the architecture and share your own observations. Through simple questions and reflections, your guide will introduce a variety of ways to engage your mind, emotions, and multiple senses as you experience the space. Whether you’re new to the study of architecture or a life-long student of Modern design, you’re sure to come away with a deeper appreciation for local history and mid-century design—and perhaps even some creative inspiration of your own.
