The Endurance of Change Open Air Exhibition
I chose to approach this summer’s new installations as a curated open-air exhibition centering on broad themes of change. Instead of a blank gallery wall, these twelve artworks may be found in and among the hundred-plus artworks and artifacts-of-artworks already situated in the ever-changing 5-acre park, adding their voices to an ongoing conversation between art and nature that has continued for more than 20 years.
While each piece addresses the subject of change, the artwork in this year’s exhibition is strikingly diverse. Some of the selected artists have chosen to explore changes wrought to the natural environment, while others created work inspired by personal experiences of growth and transition. Several additional artworks have undergone a physical transformation since their original creation, while others are designed with kinetic or perspective-based features that draw attention to the passage of time. I expect most viewers will find multiple pieces that evoke inspiration and delight – and perhaps some that elicit challenging questions, as well.
