Join us for an invigorating day of art and culture in Seattle! Our trip will start off at the University of Washington’s Henry Art Gallery, where we will take in the contemporary exhibition In Plain Sight. The group will enjoy a casual, healthy lunch together at the Volunteer Park Café, followed by a private tour and ample browsing time at the newly renovated and reopened Seattle Asian Art Museum.

Our explorations will start off at the University of Washington’s Henry Art Gallery, where we will enjoy a self-guided tour of the contemporary exhibit In Plain Sight. This group exhibition engages artists whose work addresses narratives, communities, and histories that are typically hidden or invisible in our public space (both conceptually and literally defined). The presenting artists approach the exhibition’s theme from a range of directions, varying across all media as well as aesthetic and conceptual contexts. Works encompass deliberately activist endeavors and direct documentation; the unpacking of individual histories excluded due to race, ethnicity, or class; explorations of coded language for protection, secrecy, or both; the illumination of invisible or covert systems of labor, exploitation, and capitalist control; and translation through surreal, oblique, or fantastical frameworks. Learn more about this exhibit and the Henry’s extensive permanent collections at henryart.org

We will spend approximately an hour at the Henry before moving on to a casual, healthy lunch together at Volunteer Park Café. View the menu at alwaysfreshgoodness.com

Next, we’ll take a short walk to the newly renovated and reopened Seattle Asian Art Museum, where we will enjoy a private tour followed by ample time to browse the museum. When the reopening of the Asian Art Museum, you will no longer find galleries labeled China, Japan, or India. Instead, vibrant artworks from Vietnam to Iran, and everywhere in between, come together to tell stories of human experiences across time and place. From themes of worship and celebration to clothing and identity, nature and power to birth and death, the new collection installation reveals the complexity and diversity of Asia—a place of distinct cultures, histories, and belief systems that help shape our world today. Learn more about the Asian Art Museum’s extensive renovation project and innovative new approach to exhibition design at http://inspire.site.seattleartmuseum.org
