This sculpture is gone from Webster Woods, but not from memory. These blue beach balls, wedged or pillowed between trees, raise many questions. Do they pose a mystery or do they make you laugh?
Why were they up there? How did they stay up there? Why did the artist choose two shades of blue? What would have happened if the balls were red, or yellow? Would different colors make different meaning? What do you think happened when the wind blew? How did the skin of the balls feel to the skin of the trees and visa versa.? Do you think the balls were troublesome to the trees, or the other way around? Do you think the artist thought this sculpture would last a long time? Do you think that Sculpture should last a long time? Are there other sculptures in the park that do not last a long time? Sometimes we think of unimportant things as being short-lived or “ephemeral”. Can you think of unimportant things that do not last a long time? Can you think of important things that do not last a long time? What is a long time to you? Can you think of other questions about this sculpture? Can you imagine or make something that is kept together by pressure? |
