Scots troubadour Jim Malcolm

in Concert

Feb 9, 7:30PM

The Port Angeles Fine Arts Center welcomes Scots singer/songwriter, Jim Malcolm, in a Port Angeles premiere on his winter tour of the Northwest. Based in Perth in central Scotland, Malcolm is a modern troubadour — singer, instrumentalist, raconteur — who travels the world with his guitar, harmonicas and engaging wit.

Highly regarded as an interpreter of the songs of Robert Burns, Jim sings the traditional songs of Scotland as well as his own masterfully crafted songs in a modern style that is accessible, yet utterly authentic. He is an eager student of Scotland’s great folk tradition and a master at reworking the core repertoire.

In 2004 he was voted songwriter of the year at the BBC’s annual Trad Awards and holds the record number of nominations for Scots Singer of the Year in that annual celebration of traditional music of the British Isles.

In eight years with the Celtic folk/rock band Old Blind Dogs Jim performed across Europe and North America, traveling as far as Alaska and Hawaii. Solo tours in England, Ireland, Denmark and Germany followed, including musical adventures in some off-the-charts places like Uganda.

As a solo performer Jim has recorded ten solo CDs. The release of 2011’s CD Sparkling Flash marks a milestone. He has now recorded fifty songs which are either entirely original or were built by him around some ancient fragment of text, a poem or melody.

His career highlight of 2011 was to perform his own songs Lochanside and Battle of Waterloo with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra at a sold-out concert in Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall.

Admission is $ 12 general, $ 10 Friends members at PAFAC and Port Book and News in advance, with any remaining available at the door.

Guitar Virtuoso Andre Feriante

on a ukulele flight of fancy

Feb 12, 2:00 PM

On Sunday, February 12 European classically trained and Seattle-based guitar virtuoso, Andre Feriante, will return to the PAFAC stage. A perennial favorite since his first appearance here seventeen years ago, Feriante is a master at painting musical pictures. His colorful repertoire is saturated with a strong romantic streak and sparkling musicianship that has gained him wide acclaim and a loyal and ever-growing international audience. But the Webster House remains one of his favorite places to perform.

In his last PAFAC appearance in September, 2010 Andre gave a broad sampling of his prowess from flamenco to Brazilian to contemporary on six different styles of guitar. One of these was a ukulele that had recently captured his imagination prompting him to debut his first ukulele songs that day.

After the concert he was approached by Hawaiian craftsman but now Sequim resident, David Poplar, who offered to build him a custom ukulele. To make it unique he would add an extra bass string.

Their relationship quickly gelled and over the past year David has collaborated with Andre to create five additional unique types of ukuleles. Andre has recently recorded a new album, Novella, Ukulele Mosaique, using all six Poplars. Recorded in one improvisational session, Andre drew a distinctive personality from each model.

Those instruments include: a six string that has a ukulele body and a traditional guitar neck, a tenor four string, a one of a kind three string that looks and sounds like an ancient Celtic instrument, and a very traditional concert model.

These compact instruments are somewhat exotic with a folkloric quality. Paddle shaped rather than the more common small guitar shape, they are meant to be carried around in daily life, played in the car, in the cafe, in the park.

Andre’s performances are a form of practiced storytelling through the voices he coaxes from his instruments, often overlaid with spoken and sung incantatory texts from such transcendental poets as Lorca and Rumi. At the same time there is an improvisatory energy in each performance, which against the backdrop of Erik Sandgren’s Ghost Stories is sure to draw vivid images for the enraptured listener.

Admission is $ 12 general, $ 10 Friends members at PAFAC and Port Book and News in advance, with any remaining available at the door.
