What is ArtBites?
We think of ArtBites as an intense little appetizer: the perfect bite-sized pop of inspiration to invigorate your senses and leave you wanting more.
It all starts with a group of experienced panelists who bring nuanced perspectives and unique insights into the topic at hand. Their memorable stories and sharp observations will form the backbone of our discussion, but we love to hear from you, as well! One of our favorite things about ArtBites is the smart, thoughtful audience this program attracts, and there will be opportunities for small-group discussion as well as time for panelists to respond to audience questions. Whether you’re a lifelong art-lover or just beginning to explore your imagination, ArtBites is a delicious pop of creative inspiration you won’t want to miss.
Those who have enjoyed our ArtBites programs in the past will notice some fun updates for the new year – including shifting the time to Saturday mornings, which fits better with the fun, buzzy “coffee house” vibe we’ve developed over the past couple years. You’ll also see more visual aids and a tighter program schedule, to create a better virtual experience for everyone until we can be together in person again.

What is The Magic of Light Art?
We’re kicking off 2021 in conversation with several of the innovative Northwest artists whose striking light art creations are featured in our current Wintertide Light Art Experience. Hear firsthand how each artist became interested in light art, from other artists whose work provides inspiration to the technological advances that are making it possible for more artists to incorporate light into their work. Our conversation will also explore what makes Webster’s Woods—with its 5 acres of rugged second-growth Olympic forest—such a unique and striking location to experience lighted art.

Who are the panelists?
Sarah Jane
Curator of the Light Art Experience & creator of Reflect – Refract – Disperse. Whether she’s working as an artist or a curator, Sarah Jane is interested in creating meaningful experiences: opportunities for people to encounter art in new and significant ways. The Light Art Experience combines two of her passions: new movements in contemporary art and an extraordinary natural space in which to experience them. |
Loreen Matsushima
Creator of Phylogeny – Night Glow. For more than 40 years, Loreen Matsushima’s art has focused on the natural environment and the fragility of nature. From the artist’s native Hawaii to her current home in the Pacific Northwest, Matsushima’s paintings, sculptures, and prints draw attention to the impacts of human life on the natural world. |
